India ponder five bowlers

India vice-captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has revealed that the tourists are considering fielding five bowlers for the fourth Test against Australia, which gets under way in Adelaide on Thursday.

India trail 2-1 heading into the final Test, and wicketkeeper Dhoni believes a strengthened bowling attack could see India square the four-match series.

“It’s a thought yes, but just a thought at the moment, nothing more than that,” he told the Hindustan Times. “You can take such a decision only after assessing the situation.”

He added: “You have to consider who your batsmen are, how they are performing and what other batting resources you have.

“After that, if you see that things are OK, I think it helps to use five bowlers in a Test match.”

Irfan Pathan, RP Singh and Ishant Sharma will almost certainly keep their berths in the India XI after solid showings during the third Test victory in Perth, while Harbhajan Singh could be recalled to partner fellow spin bowler Anil Kumble.

If India opt to field five bowlers, the axe could fall on opener Wasim Jaffer, who has just managed 49 runs from six innings during the current Test series.
