Spinners have a role in shortest game, says Dhoni

Going against the conventional wisdom that Twenty20 cricket is for big hitters and pacemen, Indian one-day skipper M. S. Dhoni believes spin bowlers have an important role to play in the shortest form of the game.

A survey last year by the Australian Cricketers Association among domestic Australian players contracted to Cricket Australia found that 64% believed Twenty20 diminishes spin-bowling skills.

But Dhoni believes spin bowlers who are smart with their skills and skippers who are intelligent in using the bowlers will succeed.

“I think some of the spinners have done really well in the T20 format. Maybe different conditions suit different bowlers but personally I think spinners do have a big impact on the T20,” Dhoni said.

“Of course, you have to be experienced and you cannot bowl your normal (style); at times you have to vary your pace, length and lines. If you are a shrewd bowler then you can really do well. (As a captain), mixing them is very important.”
